first half creative, second half mommy

After bodywork I went to Gorilla Coffee with classmates and then, still talking, we went together to look at vintage clothing at Beacon’s Closet on 5th and then I wrote for a while at the Pacific Street branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (the one that always makes me think of a set from The Music Man). That was my creative part.  Then on to Trader Joe’s for mommy-work shopping for vegetables to cut up as appetizers for tomorrow’s Upper Grade Potluck and the black cherry gelatin cups My Kid likes in her lunches, and something to make for dinner tonight before picking up My Kid at school where all the 4th graders returned in the evening after attending a matinee of the Broadway production of The Lion King which we all hope is creative inspiration for our children.  One of those, it’s amazing that we live in New York City days, the kind I used to read about in books.

A review last night’s production of “Dinner”

The audience reaction to last night’s production of “Dinner” was tepid at best.

The promising evening opened with red wine, but immediately began a downhill descent with the old gag; “Can’t get the broken cork out of the bottle”.

The television in the adjoining performance space was a distraction and at one point the entire audience got up and went to watch it.

There was no overture of salad on this evening and this production certainly could have used one.

The main act consisted of a trio of healthy and inexpensive performers that in combination left the audience wanting more.  One disgruntled patron was heard to remark, “Each of these goes with something else.”   There was no star on the plate this night.

Acorn squash baked with garlic has received critical acclaim in the past, but on this evening did not deliver.  It was perhaps because the squash in question was from a grocery store and not a green market.  It was a little stringy, but that is no excuse.  Even soy sauce did not bring out the expected flavor.  The couscous with “weird stuff in it”, Trader Joe brand Harvest Grains blend, was another disappointment.  The last minute addition of  the popular performer, frozen peas, failed to bring back the audience.  The strongest member of the ensemble, teriyaki marinated tofu, put in another good performance and was fairly well received by an audience in the habit of calling for an encore, but not on this evening.

In the future the producers would do well to keep their vegetarianism and frugality to themselves as it does not please this audience.

tick tick tock

Watching the clock…  How much can I get done before I have to leave?  I have two and a half hours before I have to leave for the theatre.  My Kid has Robotics after school today and The Husband is planning to leave work early to pick her up, so I don’t have to leave in half an hour to pick her up.  I have a whole two and a half hours in the apartment.

I should take a shower.  I didn’t get one this morning in the rush to get My Kid to school.  I definitely should not go into a 5 hour rehearsal without having showered today.

I just got back from Trader Joe’s.  I didn’t think I had gotten that much but when I got outside I realized it would be hard to carry the 3 bags all the way from Court and Atlantic to the subway at Jay Street.  So, I called a car service.  I hadn’t planned to call a car.  If I had I would have bought more groceries.  Well, I bought frozen enchiladas, the kind My Kid likes, they can have that for dinner tonight while I’m at rehearsal.  I also got apples, clementines, carrots and mini yoghurts for her lunch.  But, I forgot the maple syrup for her toaster waffles and the fruit bars she said she likes in her lunch.  Me, I’ve been living on Odwalla Super Protein and bananas and coffee for quite some time.  I’m too busy running around to eat. Unless I can sit down with The Husband I’m just not interested.

Enough of this blogging.  I need to get the front room organized enough so The Husband and My Kid can make dinner and do homework (IT’S ALL ABOUT THEM) and I need get together some makeup to put on.  Kendall said there would be a photographer at rehearsal tonight.  I need to draw on some eyes and lips so I won’t be featureless under the stage lights (IT’S ALL ABOUT ME).

IT’S ALL ABOUT TIME.

Hot Clowning like Hot Yoga only with noses

We were in the studio today OMG it was hot–sweating my clown nose off–yuck!

I wanted a shower when I got home–but I didn’t get one, we went to Trader Joe’s (I’m not sure if that’s because it’s the closest name grocery or if we are jumping on the “I hate Whole Foods because they hate insurance for all” bandwagon.

I have a cheat sheet here; 4 little drawn maps of the walking patterns of my “weird lady with the candle” from the last show.  Not gonna help.  We are in a different venue…

Anyway…

Rehearsal…

Hot…

Sweaty…

Clown noses are not a comfortable thing when ones face is liquid sweat–just sayin…

So I got up alone and left to go to rehearsal and then I came home and they were preparing to go shopping for the ingredients to make homemade pizza–and while we were doing that we remembered that today is the day of the fundraiser for Doug Biviano,  our PS8PTA friend who is running for City Council.   So we HAD to go to his lovely rooftop fundraiser where My Kid could see some of her PS8 BFFs.

And now we are home.  And it’s 8 o’clock.  And we are going to make dinner from scratch!
